CAIRO – 18 May 2026: Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad, Badr Abdelatty, discussed a number of regional issues of mutual interest with Massad Boulos, Senior Adviser to the US President for Arab and African Affairs, during a phone call on Sunday.
During the call, both sides expressed appreciation for the depth of the strategic partnership between Egypt and the United States, considering it a fundamental pillar for supporting security and stability in the Middle East and Africa.
They affirmed their aspiration to elevate the level of joint cooperation across various political and economic spheres and to continue close coordination and consultation on regional issues of common concern.
The call also addressed efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East. Minister Abdelatty emphasized the critical importance of resuming dialogue between the United States and Iran to reach understandings that would help achieve de-escalation.
The Foreign Minister also stressed the necessity of resorting to dialogue and diplomacy to reduce tensions and spare the region the repercussions of a wider conflict.
The call further addressed developments in Libya, with Abdelatty reaffirming Egypt’s unwavering support for Libya’s unity and stability.
He stressed the importance of unifying national institutions and reaching a comprehensive political settlement through a Libyan-led process, paving the way for simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections as soon as possible.
Regarding the situation in Sudan, Abdelatty emphasized the need to preserve Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, support its national institutions, and reject the establishment of any parallel entities.
He also stressed the importance of launching a purely Sudanese-owned political process to end the conflict. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of reaching a humanitarian truce as a preliminary step toward a sustainable ceasefire, allowing for the delivery of humanitarian aid and alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people.
The call also touched on the issue of the Ethiopian dam, Egyptian water security, and the situation in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s complete rejection of any unilateral actions, reaffirming that water security is an existential issue for Egypt.
Minister Abdelatty stressed the importance of respecting the rules of international law and the sovereignty and unity of the countries of the region in a manner that supports regional security and stability.
For his part, Massad Boulos praised Egypt’s pivotal role in supporting security and stability in the Middle East and Africa.
He also expressed appreciation for Egypt’s efforts to reduce escalation and contain regional crises, stressing the US administration’s keenness to continue strengthening the strategic partnership with Egypt and maintain close coordination between the two countries to confront common challenges.
