CAIRO - 16 May 2026: The Council of the League of Arab States, at the ministerial level, condemned the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Noble Sanctuary by an extremist minister in the Israeli occupation government, under the protection of occupation forces, coinciding with the 78th anniversary of the Nakba (the Palestinian catastrophe).

The Arab foreign ministers affirmed their complete rejection of Israeli practices within the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, including raising the occupation flags and performing provocative rituals within its courtyards. They considered these actions an attempt to impose a new reality in occupied Jerusalem and undermine the historical and legal rights of the Palestinian people.

The statement stressed that Israeli policies aim to change the existing historical and legal status quo in Jerusalem, Judaize the city, and obliterate its cultural and religious identity.

The Arab foreign ministers reaffirmed that the entire 144-dunum area of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound is a place of worship exclusively for Muslims, and that the Jerusalem Waqf and Al-Aqsa Mosque Affairs Department, affiliated with the Jordanian Ministry of Awqaf, is the sole authority responsible for its administration and regulating access to it. They also emphasized the Hashemite custodianship of the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem.

The Council called upon the international community and international organizations to uphold their legal and moral responsibilities and take immediate action to halt Israeli violations against the Palestinian people and holy sites in Jerusalem, and to take deterrent measures against settlers and those responsible for these violations.
