CAIRO – 13 May 2026: Hamas has renewed its call for the immediate empowerment of the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, also known as the technocratic committee, by allowing it to enter the Gaza Strip, assume its full responsibilities, and receive all necessary resources to carry out its work.
Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said the movement had taken all required steps to hand over various aspects of governance and administration in the Strip to the National Committee.
Qassem also expressed surprise at statements made by senior diplomat Nikolay Mladenov, in which he called for the current administration in Gaza to step down before allowing the committee to enter the enclave.
He argued that such a move “would effectively plunge Gaza into chaos and anarchy, which is precisely what the criminal occupation seeks and is working to perpetuate.”
Mladenov, the senior diplomat overseeing the U.S.-brokered ceasefire in Gaza, recently accused Hamas of obstructing the ceasefire agreement by refusing to surrender its weapons, a key condition outlined in the peace plan discussed on multiple occasions.
Speaking to reporters in Jerusalem on Wednesday, Mladenov repeatedly described disarmament as a fundamental sticking point, stressing that Hamas’s commitment to relinquishing its arsenal was “non-negotiable.”
He added that progress on other major issues—including reconstruction, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, and the formation of a new Palestinian government—remains stalled.
“Seven months since the ceasefire, the door to the future of Gaza is still closed,” he said. “It is not what the Palestinians were promised, and it is not what they deserve. And it is not giving Israel the security to move forward, as the Israeli people also want.”
