CAIRO - 13 May 2026: Egypt called for a unified African vision and balanced international partnerships to ensure fair access to digital infrastructure, Communications Minister Raafat Hindy said Tuesday.
In a speech at the Africa-France Summit in Nairobi, Hindy emphasized that Africa must move away from relying on foreign-developed models to achieve comprehensive development based on local priorities since AI has become a core pillar of digital sovereignty and economic competitiveness.
Hindy highlighted Egypt's investment in "sovereign" digital tools, specifically the "Karnak" Arabic Large Language Model. He noted that such initiatives helped Egypt climb 14 places in the 2025 AI Readiness Index to rank 51st globally.
The minister also urged for a "responsible" AI framework that protects digital rights while integrating technology into education and healthcare.
The summit, held 11-12 May under the theme "Africa Forward," included participation from African leaders, the French President, and the UN Secretary-General to address global financial reforms and the digital shift.
