CAIRO - 12 May 2026: Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, confirmed that the Hantavirus does not represent a new pandemic similar to the novel coronavirus, explaining that its transmission differs significantly from COVID-19.

Hantavirus is primarily transmitted from rodents to humans.

Abdel Ghaffar explained that the Hantavirus is primarily transmitted from rodents to humans through inhaling dust or contact with contaminated droppings.

He noted that person-to-person transmission is extremely rare, unlike the coronavirus, which spread rapidly through respiratory droplets and direct contact.

He emphasized that there are currently no confirmed cases of Hantavirus in Egypt, and that the health situation is reassuring and being continuously monitored.

The Ministry of Health and Population is monitoring the epidemiological situation moment by moment.

He added that the Ministry of Health and Population is monitoring the epidemiological situation moment by moment in full coordination with the World Health Organization, while raising the levels of surveillance and monitoring at all air, sea and land ports, to ensure early detection and immediate handling of any suspected cases, stressing the importance of relying on information issued by official authorities and not being swayed by rumors, emphasizing that health awareness and adherence to preventive measures represent the first line of defense in preserving public health.
