Putin says Ukraine war may be nearing end after ceasefire announcement

CAIRO – 9 May 2026: Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Saturday that he believes the war in Ukraine may be approaching its end, Reuters reported.

Speaking to reporters at the Kremlin, Putin said, “I think the matter is coming to an end,” referring to the conflict that has entered its fifth year.

His remarks came after Russia and Ukraine confirmed US President Donald Trump’s announcement of a three-day ceasefire from May 9 to 11 and a swap involving 1,000 prisoners from each side.

Trump described the pause in fighting as a possible “beginning of the end” of the war.
