Trump announces 3-day ceasefire, prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine

WASHINGTON – 8 May 2026: US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a three-day ceasefire from May 9 to May 11, alongside a major prisoner exchange between the two countries.

In a post published on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the ceasefire will include “a suspension of all kinetic activity” as well as the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side.

Trump said the request for the ceasefire was made directly by him and thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for agreeing to the arrangement.

“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought war,” Trump said.

He added that talks aimed at ending the war are continuing, describing the Russia-Ukraine war as the biggest conflict since World War II.

“We are getting closer and closer every day.”
