CAIRO – 7 May 2026: The cultural ties between Egypt and the United Arab Emirates have reached new heights, evolving from academic exchanges in the 1960s into a massive strategic partnership involving heritage preservation, arts, and education. This relationship, described as a "pillar of Arab awareness" by Emirati officials, continues to flourish through joint initiatives and multi-million dollar investments in cultural landmarks.
Egypt has been the primary destination for Emirati students seeking higher education since the 1960s, a tradition that dates back to the first educational mission in 1927. In 1992, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan established the Institute for Teaching Arabic to Non-Native Speakers in Egypt, cementing Cairo's role as a regional hub for language and learning.
The UAE has been a key supporter of Egyptian cultural infrastructure:
The Museum of Islamic Art: Restored with a $50 million Emirati grant following its damage in 2014.
The Library of Alexandria (Bibliotheca Alexandrina): Received a $21 million grant to enhance its position as a global cultural beacon.
Theater and Arts: Significant cooperation exists in experimental theater, with Dubai and Sharjah frequently hosting and honoring Egyptian artists and innovators.
Recent years have seen Egypt as a "Guest of Honor" at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair and active participation in the "Reading Challenge" initiative. During recent high-level meetings between the Egyptian Ministry of Culture and Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, both nations committed to expanding cooperation in museum management, intangible heritage, and the digital arts.
Noura Al Kaabi, former UAE Minister of Culture, emphasized that this partnership is more than just projects; it is a shared vision of brotherhood rooted in the legacy of Sheikh Zayed, making Egypt-UAE relations a model for the entire Arab world.
During the metting of the Presidnent Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Emirati President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, he reaffirmed Egypt’s support for the security and stability of the UAE during a brief visit to the UAE on Thursday.
El-Sisi stressed Egypt’s solidarity with the UAE amid the current regional circumstances and its categorical rejection of Iranian attacks on its sovereignty, according to a statement by the Egyptian Presidency.
“What affects the UAE affects Egypt,” El-Sisi said.
He stressed that the Iranian attacks on the UAE constitute a flagrant violation of the principles of international law and the UN Charter, and represent a dangerous escalation threatening the security and stability of the region and the world.
In light of the current regional situation, El-Sisi called for intensified efforts to resolve the crisis through dialogue and diplomatic means, the statement said.
