CAIRO – 4 May 2026: US President Donald Trump has announced the launch of "Operation Freedom," a new initiative aimed at securing and guiding maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz beginning Monday, Middle East time.
President Trump explained that the primary goal is to facilitate smoother transit through the strait, noting that several nations not involved in the ongoing Middle Eastern conflict have requested Washington’s assistance to ensure the safe passage of their vessels.
The US President stated that the United States informed these countries it would provide direct guidance and protection for their ships, allowing them to resume normal commercial operations.
He described the move as being in the best interest of Iran, the broader region, and the United States alike. Trump further emphasized that the operation is designed to protect innocent individuals, companies, and nations that have become victims of circumstance due to recent geopolitical tensions impacting global trade.
He further stated that the initiative comes as a humanitarian gesture by the United States and regional partners, suggesting it could reflect a degree of goodwill between parties that have faced confrontations in recent months.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed it would begin active support for "Project Freedom" on Monday to restore freedom of navigation for commercial vessels.
Under the US President’s direction, CENTCOM forces will assist ships seeking free passage. The State and Defense Departments have also launched a "Maritime Freedom Structure" initiative to bolster coordination within the strait.
The commander of CENTCOM remarked that this defensive mission is vital for regional security and the global economy, confirming that military support will include guided-missile destroyers.
The operation is set to involve more than 100 aircrafts and approximately 15,000 military personnel.
Officials noted that while "Project Freedom" moves forward, the United States will simultaneously continue to enforce a naval blockade. According to reports from Axios, US Navy ships will remain in the immediate vicinity to deter the Iranian military from attacking transiting vessels. Furthermore, the US Navy will provide commercial ships with critical intelligence regarding safe routes that are not threatened by Iranian mines.
