ALEXANDRIA – 3 May 2026: French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Egypt next week to inaugurate the new campus of L’Université Senghor (Senghor University) in Borg El Arab, Alexandria, well-informed sources told Egypt Today.

L’Université Senghor in Alexandria is a French-language international university dedicated to supporting African development.

Established in 1990 and named after former Senegalese President Léopold Sédar Senghor, it offers postgraduate master’s programmes in four main fields: environment, administration, culture and health.

The university was originally based in central Alexandria’s Mansheya district before its permanent relocation to Borg El Arab.

Anticipated Inauguration

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on Sunday reviewed preparations with the prime minister ahead of the campus inauguration in May, saying the project reflects deep cooperation between Egypt and international partners and supports development and capacity-building efforts in Africa.

El-Sisi also highlighted the university’s role in providing an integrated educational environment for students from African and Francophone countries.

New Campus

The new campus spans nearly 10 feddans and includes two academic buildings, an administration building, a conference hall, a restaurant, four student dormitories, a staff residence and a visitor center.

It also features a gym, swimming pool, multi-purpose sports field and squash courts.

A total of 143 students are currently enrolled in the 2025–2027 cohort at the new campus: culture (42), environment (29), administration (35) and health (37).

The programmes offer eight specializations aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, including cultural heritage management, management of cultural institutions, biodiversity and nature reserve management, environmental management, governance of public utilities, project management, international nutrition, and public health.

L’Université Senghor receives students from dozens of African countries and offers specialized master’s programmes in development-related fields, including public health, environment and public administration.

With academic partnerships across Africa and Europe, the university has graduated thousands of students since its establishment, reinforcing its role as a leading institution in capacity-building and sustainable development on the continent.
