CAIRO - 30 April 2026: Al-Azhar University is considering adding three new faculties to its admissions system for the 2026-2027 academic year.

These faculties, the first of their kind, are Fine Arts (for women), Archaeology, and Physical Therapy.

The university is working to finalize the regulations for these faculties in an effort to include them in next year's admissions process.

His Eminence the Grand Imam, Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar, previously proposed an initiative to study the establishment of a Faculty of Fine Arts at Al-Azhar University to nurture the talents of Al-Azhar students.

Scholars perceived this step as demonstrating that Al-Azhar does not hinder the arts and that Islam encourages the arts and the development of talents.

This proposal also represents a new opening for knowledge within Al-Azhar and Islamic thought. Al-Azhar previously opened a Faculty of Physical Education for boys and another for girls, which is a sign of intellectual renewal within Al-Azhar. Once established, the Faculty of Fine Arts should be an enlightening tool for scientific research in all the arts, not just painting and sculpture.

The Sheikh of Al-Azhar previously praised the artistic and creative skills of the students, indicating Al-Azhar's intention to establish an "Art Center" to nurture and develop the abilities of talented students at Al-Azhar.

He also mentioned exploring the possibility of opening a Department of Art Education within the Faculties of Education at Al-Azhar University, as well as establishing partnerships and cooperative relationships with ministries and cultural and artistic bodies to train students, refine their talents, and provide them with opportunities to participate in local and international events and competitions.

He emphasized that Al-Azhar relies on these talents to practically demonstrate its support and patronage of serious and meaningful arts.
