WASHINGTON – 26 April 2026: US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were swiftly evacuated from the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington on Saturday night after a gunman opened fire nearby.
The assailant was quickly subdued and taken into custody, with officials saying there is no indication of additional suspects or a broader threat.
According to authorities, the suspect, armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives, attempted to breach a Secret Service-controlled area and fired at an agent, who was protected by a bullet-resistant vest and is expected to recover.
The incident caused panic among attendees at the high-profile event, with many guests hiding under tables, prompting security personnel to evacuate senior officials.
Trump later told reporters at the White House that “they go after you” when “you’re impactful,” adding that “I want to live because I want to make this country great.
The US president said the injured agent is in “good shape” and described the attacker as a likely “lone wolf.”
The suspect was identified as Cole Allen, a 31-year-old man from California, and an investigation is ongoing.
