CAIRO – 23 April 2026: An Egyptian medical team has successfully performed the first acute cerebral clot removal (mechanical thrombectomy) in Luxor Governorate, according to a statement by the Egypt Healthcare Authority on Thursday.

The procedure was carried out at the Cerebral Catheterization Unit of Taiba Specialized Hospital in Esna, marking a significant milestone in the expansion of advanced medical services in Upper Egypt.

According to the statement, the patient, a 39-year-old woman, was initially admitted to Luxor Medical Complex as she suffered from complete paralysis on her right side and loss of speech. The case was handled promptly through close coordination between the Neurology Department at Luxor Medical Complex and Taiba Specialized Hospital, with the patient swiftly transferred for specialized intervention.

The catheterization and clot removal procedure were successfully completed within six hours of symptom onset. Blood flow to the affected arteries was restored, after which the patient was moved to the intensive care unit for continued treatment and close monitoring under the supervision of specialized medical teams.

The Authority noted that this achievement reflects ongoing efforts to enhance and develop specialized healthcare services across facilities in Luxor Governorate.

Mechanical thrombectomy represents a major advancement in the treatment of acute stroke, playing a critical role in reducing permanent disability and preventing severe complications such as paralysis, loss of speech, or death.
