CAIRO – 23 April 2026: Coinciding with the Sinai Liberation Day celebrations, the Egyptian General Authority for Healthcare reviewed its efforts to develop the health sector in Sinai Peninsula through the Comprehensive Health Insurance System in South Sinai Governorate.
Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the General Authority for Healthcare, confirmed that the total number of medical and treatment services provided in South Sinai exceeded 2.4 million, delivered as per the highest quality standards. The specific time during which these services were provided was not mentioned.
He explained that healthcare services in South Sinai are provided through 27 medical facilities affiliated with the Authority, including five hospitals and 22 family health units and centers, ensuring comprehensive health coverage for all citizens in South Sinai and enhancing access to services in remote and border areas.
He noted that South Sinai Governorate achieved an 88 percent completion rate in the comprehensive medical examination of its residents, in addition to the introduction of advanced medical services for the first time, including open-heart surgery, joint replacement, and pacemaker implantation. Furthermore, a range of specialized services were incorporated under the umbrella of the Comprehensive Health Insurance system at the Authority's facilities, contributing to a reduction in patient referrals.
He added that the Authority has been keen to enhance access to healthcare services for the most vulnerable groups through the implementation of awareness programs and mobile medical caravans targeting Bedouin communities and citizens in remote and border areas. This ensures increased health awareness and the provision of medical services to all citizens, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.
Regarding expansion plans, the Authority's Chairman confirmed that the second phase of the Comprehensive Health Insurance system will include North Sinai Governorate, which is slated to encompass 51 healthcare facilities, including seven hospitals and 44 family health units and centers. This reflects the state's continued commitment to implementing the comprehensive health development system in Sinai and enhancing access to integrated medical services for all citizens.
In January 2024, the Egyptian Cabinet announced the official launch of the Comprehensive Health Insurance System in South Sinai, starting from January 1st.
