CAIRO - 20 April 2026: Egyptian Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Alaa Farouk, announced the state's success in achieving a tangible breakthrough in food security, confirming the attainment of complete self-sufficiency in five essential commodity groups: fresh milk, table eggs, poultry, rice, and sugar.

Farouk explained that this achievement comes amidst challenges, as the state is committed to providing for the food needs of 108 million citizens, in addition to hosting approximately 9 million residents. This necessitated flexible strategies to increase agricultural productivity and develop livestock and poultry.

In a related context, Farouk revealed the outlines of the ministry's future plan, which aims to increase self-sufficiency rates in crops and products that still experience import gaps.

These crops include: wheat, where efforts have been made to raise the self-sufficiency rate to 50%; corn, where local production has reached 55% of market needs; and red meat, with a timetable set to increase local coverage to 60%.
