CAIRO - 17 April 2026: Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, has strongly condemned Israel's decision to appoint an ambassador to the region known as "Somaliland." He described the move as a dangerous escalation that directly threatens Somalia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Aboul Gheit emphasized that this step constitutes a clear violation of international law and the UN Charter. He stressed that the appointment lacks any legal basis and carries no legitimate legal effect, reaffirming that the Arab League remains committed to the unity of its member states.
The Arab League's spokesperson stated that the organization categorically rejects any diplomatic dealings or recognition of "Somaliland" outside the framework of the Federal Republic of Somalia. This position aligns with a consistent Arab commitment to upholding the national unity of Somalia.
The Secretary-General warned that such provocative moves could destabilize regional security, particularly in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa. He noted that these actions threaten the stability of international navigation and global trade in one of the world's most strategic maritime corridors.
The Arab League has dispatched official messages to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and other international officials. The aim is to mobilize a global stance against this move and prevent its negative repercussions on regional stability and international law.
