CAIRO - 15 April 2026: German Ambassador to Cairo, Jürgen Schulz, praised Egypt's pivotal role in promoting peace and stability in the region.

In the same context, he emphasizes that Egypt's mediation efforts between the United States, Israel, and Iran to reach a ceasefire are clear evidence of this role.

He further added that these efforts reflect Egypt's commitment to dialogue and de-escalation, stemming from its deep understanding of the complexities of the situation in the Middle East and its unwavering desire to achieve lasting peace.

Egyptian Mediation Efforts

In an interview with the Middle East News Agency (MENA) on Wednesday, the German Ambassador to Cairo expressed his belief that the ceasefire will not only restore immediate stability to the region but will also open avenues for addressing critical humanitarian and economic issues.

He stressed the importance of Egyptian mediation efforts and close coordination with key partners in creating the conditions for a broader and more comprehensive dialogue between the United States, Israel, and Iran, particularly regarding key issues such as the Iranian nuclear program and regional security.

The Repercussions of closing the Strait of Hormuz

He explained that Berlin understands the serious challenges facing Egypt as a result of the ongoing tensions in the region and fully recognizes the central role Egypt plays in maintaining stability.

He also confirmed that Egypt possesses the potential to become a regional logistics hub, given its unique location, which qualifies it to play a crucial role in mitigating the repercussions of closing the Strait of Hormuz.

He also added that Egypt possesses the opportunity to become a more significant player in global trade and energy flows, given its strategic location, advanced infrastructure, and strong maritime capabilities.

He stated that Germany supports Egypt's efforts to diversify its energy mix and enhance its independence from fossil fuel imports.

He affirmed Berlin's readiness to assist Cairo in improving the conditions conducive to private sector growth, thereby contributing to job creation and promising economic prospects for Egypt's youth through development cooperation.

He explained that closing the Strait of Hormuz has had severe economic consequences for both the European Union and Germany, given that it is a transit route for approximately 20 percent of global oil traffic.

He explained that this disruption has already led to a sharp rise in global oil prices, and that Germany believes this shutdown will increase pressure on energy supplies, which are still recovering from the energy crisis caused by the war in Ukraine.

Germany's Position on the Conflict

The German ambassador in Cairo stated that Germany's position, as emphasized by Foreign Minister Johannes Wadephul, is that "Germany will not participate in this conflict," referring to the military standoff in the Strait of Hormuz. He expressed skepticism about expanding the EU's "ESPID" mission to include the Strait and stressed the importance of reaching a negotiated solution, adding that "Europe's role is to provide constructive support for securing maritime routes, but only after the existing conflict is resolved."

He pointed out that Germany, along with other countries, has adopted several measures to mitigate the effects of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and is working to stabilize global energy markets, including supporting the coordinated release of strategic oil reserves by the International Energy Agency. He added that Berlin is cooperating with oil-producing countries to increase production and is providing humanitarian support to affected countries through the United Nations and international financial institutions.
