Egyptian FM Badr Abdelatty in phone call with his Germany and Italian counterparts - file
CAIRO - 11 April 2026: Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad, Dr. Badr Abdelatty expressed his hope that the upcoming negotiations in Islamabad between the United States and Iran would be fruitful and contribute to de-escalation.
This came during two phone calls between the Foreign Minister and both Antonio Tajani, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Italy, and Johannes Wadephul, Foreign Minister of Germany, to exchange views and assessments on the latest developments in the region following the announcement by the United States and Iran of a ceasefire and the upcoming negotiations between the two sides in Islamabad.
Minister Abdelatty briefed the German and Italian Foreign Ministers on the intensive efforts undertaken by Egypt recently to contain the escalation in the region in close coordination with regional partners. He emphasized the need to build upon the ceasefire declaration as a fundamental pillar that strengthens efforts aimed at de-escalation.
During the two calls, the Foreign Minister stressed the priority of the diplomatic track and negotiations to address the current situation, emphasizing the importance of unifying regional and international efforts at this critical juncture to ensure the sustainability of the ceasefire and create a conducive environment for reaching understandings between the United States and Iran that would lead to an end to the war.
They also exchanged views on the dangerous developments in Lebanon in light of the brutal Israeli aggression targeting several areas in the country. The Foreign Minister reiterated Egypt's complete condemnation of the Israeli aggression and the terrorizing of civilians, stressing that it constitutes a dangerous escalation and a flagrant violation of international law.
He emphasized the necessity of an immediate cessation of the aggression and that the international community, including the European Union, must assume its responsibility in exerting pressure to stop the Israeli aggression.
He also affirmed Egypt's complete rejection of any infringement upon Lebanon's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, emphasizing Egypt's full solidarity with its brotherly nation of Lebanon.
In this context, the Foreign Ministers welcomed the planned meeting in Washington between the Lebanese and Israeli sides, stressing the importance of this step in opening a channel for direct negotiations to halt Israeli attacks on Lebanon.
Minister Abdelatty briefed his German and Italian counterparts on Egypt's ongoing communications with the United States and Lebanon regarding this matter. He welcomed the decision announced by Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam that the Lebanese Cabinet had resolved to restrict weapons to the legitimate security forces of the state.
The German and Italian foreign ministers commended Egypt's constructive role in recent times in de-escalating tensions in the region, in cooperation with regional partners.
The ministers agreed to continue coordination and consultation in the coming period and to intensify efforts to reduce tensions, emphasizing that diplomatic solutions remain the best option for supporting security and stability in the region.
