CAIRO – 9 April 2026: Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein affirmed that Egypt’s role is a cornerstone of stability in the Middle East, praising Cairo’s "tremendous" efforts to bridge gaps between international and regional parties.

He specifically highlighted Egypt’s mediation between Iran and the United States during one of the most critical historical and political phases in the region's history.

These remarks were made during a joint press conference held on Thursday by the Iraqi minister and his Egyptian counterpart, Badr Abdelatty, during the latter's visit to Baghdad.

Hussein described the visit as "important and historic," noting that Abdelatty was the first foreign official to arrive in Iraq immediately following the reopening of its airspace, which had been closed due to recent military tensions.

The Iraqi Foreign Minister commended the ongoing and fruitful coordination with Cairo, noting that Egyptian diplomacy played a prominent role in reaching the initial understandings between the U.S. and Iran. These efforts paved the way for the upcoming high-stakes meeting in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.

Hussein explained that Cairo, Baghdad, and Islamabad remain in constant communication, exchanging views at every stage of the negotiations to ensure a comprehensive and lasting peace agreement is reached.

In a related context, Hussein emphasized the convergence of Egyptian and Iraqi views in condemning aggression against regional nations. He stressed that Egypt has been at the forefront of countries condemning the war and the attacks that targeted Iraq, Jordan, and the Gulf states.

The ministers also addressed the tragic situation in Lebanon, strongly condemning the ongoing attacks on the Lebanese people and warning that an expansion of the conflict threatens Arab national security in its broadest sense.

The Iraqi minister concluded by affirming that Egyptian-Iraqi relations are witnessing significant development across all levels, driven by a strong political will to strengthen joint Arab action. He described Badr Abdelatty’s visit as further evidence of the depth of this strategic partnership.
