CAIRO – 9 April 2026: U.S. President Donald Trump told NBC that Israel has begun scaling back its operations in Lebanon, noting that he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who agreed to "low-key" the situation.
“I spoke with Bibi and he’s going to low-key it. I just think we have to be sort of a little more low-key,” Trump said.
The U.S. President also issued a warning, stating that if Iran does not reach an agreement, "it will be very painful," hinting at the possibility of escalating measures.
Despite the warning, Trump noted that he is “very optimistic” about reaching a peace deal. A diplomatic delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, is currently preparing to head to Pakistan for high-stakes talks aimed at ending the nearly six-week conflict.
Discussing the negotiations, Trump remarked that Iran’s leaders “talk much differently when you’re at a meeting than they do to the press. They’re much more reasonable.” He continued, “They’re agreeing to all the things that they have to agree to. Remember, they’ve been conquered. They have no military.”
Trump reiterated that while Iran has suffered heavy blows, placing it in a difficult position, its leaders are currently acting "reasonably" during the negotiations. However, he maintained his stance on the consequences of a failed deal: “If they don’t make a deal, it’s going to be very painful.”
