CAIRO - 8 April 2026: Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit welcomed Wednesday the agreement between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran on a two-week ceasefire, stressing that it is an important step in the right direction that must be upheld and not undermined.

Aboul Gheit emphasized the need to solidify the ceasefire and work to de-escalate tensions, preventing the region from sliding into catastrophic scenarios that threaten regional stability.

He also stressed the importance of Iran halting all its military attacks on Arab states, reopening the Strait of Hormuz to maritime navigation, and ensuring the flow of energy supplies, while emphasizing that any future arrangements must take into account the interests and security of the Gulf states.

He explained that it is natural for the agreement to include de-escalation in other arenas, noting the necessity of halting Israeli attacks on Lebanon and preventing the continuation of military operations outside the framework of the understandings.

Official spokesman Jamal Rushdi conveyed the Secretary-General's affirmation that the region's security is indivisible, and that joint Arab cooperation remains the cornerstone for achieving sustainable peace.
