El-Sisi lauds US-Iran ceasefire, calls for war-end deal respecting regional states’ security concerns

CAIRO – 8 April 2026: President El‑Sisi on Wednesday lauded the United States-Iran ceasefire, urging a permanent deal that ends the war and addresses security concerns of the Gulf states, Iraq and Jordan.

In a social media post, El-Sisi said the deal announced early in the day “has undoubtedly brought great relief to millions of peace-loving people around the world.”

He expressed hope that “this positive development will be crowned with a permanent agreement to end the war in the region, restore security and stability, and achieve the aspirations of its peoples for development, progress, and prosperity.”

Supporting GCC States

The president reaffirmed Egypt’s “full and unconditional support” for the Gulf Cooperation Council states as well as Jordan and Iraq, during these difficult circumstances.

He stressed the importance that “any forthcoming agreement take into account their legitimate security concerns and requirements.”

The deal pauses severe US‑Israeli strikes on Iran that began on February 28 and have sparked retaliatory Iranian attacks across the Gulf, including on Gulf states, Iraq and Jordan, while disrupting shipping through key routes and driving energy prices sharply higher.

Egypt’s Role in Peace

El-Sisi called for serious involvement in negotiations to uphold permanent peace in the region.

“As Egypt values President Trump’s decision to heed the voice of reason and uphold the values of humanity and peace, it calls on all parties to engage seriously in negotiations aimed at achieving lasting peace and peaceful coexistence among the peoples of the region and the world.”

The president added that “I will continue to exert every sincere and dedicated effort aimed at ending conflicts and establishing a just and comprehensive peace in our region and across the world.”

US-Iran Deal Overnight

Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week "double-sided" ceasefire between the US and Iran, contingent on ensuring the safe passage of vessels through the Strait of Hormuz.

The announcement came ahead of the expiration of a deadline he had set for Tehran to reopen the vital shipping lane and reach an agreement or face “hell.”

Trump had warned that the US would strike Iran’s power stations and civilian infrastructure, stating that “a whole civilization will die tonight” and “never to be brought back again.”

In a post on his platform Truth Social today, Trump said the ceasefire followed talks involving Pakistan, which acted as a mediator between Washington and Tehran alongside regional partners including Egypt and Turkey in recent weeks.

 

Tehran also announced its agreement to halt its “defensive” operations and to allow freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz “in coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces and with due consideration of technical limitations” for the same two-week period.

Trump further revealed that the United States had received a 10-point proposal from Iran, describing it as a “workable basis” for negotiations.

Tehran, for its part, said it had also received a 15-point plan from Washington to guide potential talks.

In a separate post hours later, Trump said the United States “will be helping with the traffic buildup in the Strait of Hormuz,” adding that Iran could begin reconstruction efforts.

“We’ll be loading up with supplies of all kinds, and just ‘hangin’ around’ to make sure that everything goes well,” he said.
