CAIRO – 1 April 2026: Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad, Badr Abdelatty, met on Wednesday with Pekka Haavisto, the newly appointed Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the ministerial gathering of leading African countries implementing the Global Compact for Migration.

The two officials discussed the latest developments in the Sudanese crisis and explored strategies to contain the ongoing conflict.

Ambassador Tamim Khallaf, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that Minister Abdelatty congratulated Haavisto on his new role, affirming Egypt's full support for UN efforts to restore security and stability in the region.

Abdelatty outlined the core parameters of Egypt’s position on the crisis, emphasizing the necessity of preserving Sudan's unity and territorial integrity. He reiterated Egypt’s support for Sudan’s national institutions and its rejection of any parallel entities. He also stressed the importance of launching a Sudanese-owned political process to bring the protracted conflict to an end.

The Foreign Minister called for a humanitarian truce as a vital preliminary step toward a sustainable ceasefire.

This would facilitate the delivery of essential aid and alleviate the severe suffering of the Sudanese people. He also condemned ongoing violations against civilians, describing them as a flagrant breach of international humanitarian law, and called for the protection of vital infrastructure.

Abdelatty expressed Egypt’s categorical rejection of external interference in Sudanese affairs, noting that such actions only fuel and prolong the conflict. He stressed the importance of respecting Sudan’s sovereignty while supporting de-escalation efforts.

In a related context, the Foreign Minister reviewed Egypt's active regional and international initiatives, including its role within the African Union Peace and Security Council.

He highlighted continued coordination with international partners, particularly the Quartet, to advance de-escalation and create an environment conducive to resuming a comprehensive political process that meets the aspirations of the Sudanese people.

For his part, the UN envoy expressed his appreciation for Egypt's pivotal role in supporting regional stability and commended its ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Haavisto reviewed the results of his recent visits to Khartoum and Port Sudan, where he met with various officials and representatives to enhance the humanitarian response and calm the situation.

He concluded by stressing the importance of continued coordination with Egypt in the coming stages to improve the chances for a lasting peace.
