CAIRO – 1 April 2026: Eight people have been killed and 17 others injured after a fire broke out at a clothing factory and storage facility on the ground floor of a 12-story residential building in Cairo on Tuesday evening, according to reports today.
The figures represent an increase from the initial toll of three deaths and two injuries reported by the Cairo Governorate late on Tuesday.
The factory owner has been arrested for investigation over the fire.
Cairo Governor Ibrahim Saber had confirmed that civil defense forces were able to bring the blaze under control on Saraya El-Qobba Street, Zeitoun district, and are currently carrying out cooling operations.
The governorate’s national emergency and public safety network operations center had received a report of the fire, prompting the immediate deployment of civil defense units to the scene.
Local district officials, along with executive and security authorities, also rushed to the site. Utilities were cut off as a precaution, and the fire was contained with the assistance of six fire engines and 10 ambulances.
Saber ordered the formation of an engineering committee to assess the structural impact of the fire on the affected building, located at No. 4.
He also directed swift removal of the aftermath of the fire after the Public Prosecution and criminal investigators complete their inspection to determine the cause of the incident.
