CAIRO - 31 March 2026: Military operations in the Middle East are accelerating as the joint US-Israeli war against Iran enters its 31st day. Amid intensive regional and international efforts to cease hostilities, questions are mounting: Is an end to the conflict finally in sight?

White House: Private Talks Differ from Public Rhetoric

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that discussions with Iran are ongoing and "proceeding well." She noted a significant discrepancy between Tehran’s public defiance and the messages conveyed to American officials behind closed doors. According to Leavitt, Iran has privately agreed to several points proposed by Washington.

However, the US remains cautious. "Anything Iran states in private meetings will be subject to testing," Leavitt emphasized, adding that the United States will ensure Tehran is held accountable for fulfilling its promises.

This diplomatic push follows a recent ultimatum from President Donald Trump, who threatened to destroy Iranian power plants and oil wells if Tehran fails to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. This tension escalated after Iran dismissed US peace proposals as "unrealistic" and launched waves of missile strikes against Israel.

Pentagon Deploys Elite Troops as "Ground Option" Looms

Despite the negotiations, the US military footprint is expanding. US officials told Reuters that thousands of troops from the 82nd Airborne Division, the US Army's elite rapid-response force, have begun arriving in the Middle East.

These paratroopers, based out of Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg), North Carolina, will join thousands of additional personnel from the Navy, Marine Corps, and Special Operations already stationed in the region. Approximately 2,500 Marines arrived over the weekend.

While sources indicate that a final decision to send troops directly into Iran has not been made, their presence significantly bolsters "preparatory capabilities" for any future regional operations.

Tehran’s Warning: "Entering is Easy, Leaving is Not"

Iran has responded sharply to the military buildup. Mohammad Reza Aref, Iran’s First Vice President, issued a stern warning regarding potential ground incursions.

"President Trump may have the power to decide to send his soldiers to Kharg Island, but the decision regarding their return will not be in his hands," Aref stated.

Regarding the "negotiations" claimed by the White House, the Iranian Foreign Ministry denied any direct contact with the US during the month-long war. Instead, they clarified that proposals were received through intermediaries, including Pakistan.

"Our position is clear: we are dedicating all efforts to defending our sovereignty against continued American aggression," the Ministry said in a statement, adding that they have not forgotten the "betrayal of diplomacy" experienced twice within the last year.

Israel: Strategic Goals Nearly Met

In Tel Aviv, the political and security leadership is bracing for the possibility that President Trump may announce a ceasefire in the coming days, potentially even without a finalized agreement.

Army Radio quoted a security source stating that Israel is currently in the final stages of achieving its strategic objectives within Iran. Ultimately, the source noted, the decision to halt the war rests entirely with the American President.
