CAIRO - 31 March 2026: Egyptian Minister of Transport, Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir, received Ambassador Richard Mutayoba Makanzo, Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania to Cairo.

This meeting, held as per President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's directives to enhance cooperation and maximize intra-African trade, addressed ways to bolster joint cooperation across all transport sectors.

The meeting was attended by Ambassador Ahmed Rizk, Head of the International Cooperation Sector at the Ministry; Engineer Mohamed Fathy, Assistant Minister for Maritime Transport; and Engineer Ahmed El-Sewedy, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Elsewedy Electric.

Historical ties and a strategic partnership toward integration

At the outset of the meeting, Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir emphasized Egypt's keenness to advance joint cooperation with Tanzania in the transport sector, building upon the historical and fraternal ties that bind the two brotherly nations.

The Minister clarified that the proposed cooperation is based on the principle of integration, not competition, noting that the shared political will aims to elevate bilateral relations to broader horizons of partnership and economic integration.

Four key points in the upcoming MoU

The Minister of Transport revealed details of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), scheduled to be signed soon, which includes four strategic pillars:

Multi-Purpose Terminal: Establishing and operating a terminal at the Port of Dar es-Salaam through the "Egypt-Tanzania International" alliance, given its strategic importance as the main gateway for six landlocked countries (Malawi, Zambia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda).

New Shipping Line: Establishing a shipping line connecting Egyptian ports on the Red Sea (Sokhna and Safaga) with the Port of Dar es-Salaam in Tanzania.

Reciprocal Logistics Zones: Creating a logistics zone for Egypt in Tanzania and another for Tanzania in Egypt, similar to Rwanda's successful model, to support joint industries and create job opportunities.

High-Speed rail link: Utilizing Tanzania's high-speed rail network to transport goods from the Port of Dar es-Salaam to the borders and neighboring countries, and vice versa.

Egyptian companies' expertise in serving Tanzanian projects

The Minister pointed out that Egypt possesses leading companies with extensive experience in infrastructure. These have contributed to the construction of the New Administrative Capital as well as in the urban development through road, bridge, tunnel, and dam projects.

He affirmed these companies' readiness to participate in implementing projects in Tanzania with the highest quality standards, in the shortest time, and at the most competitive prices, in support of the strong relations between the two countries.

For his part, the Tanzanian Ambassador in Cairo expressed his deep appreciation for Egypt's role and extensive expertise in the transport and infrastructure sector.

He emphasized that Tuesday's discussions are an important step toward achieving significant cooperation that reflects the strong relations between the two peoples, noting that the coming period will witness intensive meetings between the Ministers of Transport and the technical committees to launch the projects included in the joint memorandum of understanding.
