CAIRO - 31 March 2026: The law on regulating mental health care has set punishments to anyone who tampers with the procedures for treating mentally ill patients.

Article 46 of the Mental Health Care Law in Egypt stipulates that the following shall be punished by imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months and a fine not exceeding LE 3,000, or by either of these penalties:

1. Anyone who intentionally enables a person subject to involuntary admission or treatment procedures to escape, or assists them in doing so, or conceals them, either personally or through another, knowing that they are in such a situation.

2. Anyone who obstructs an inspection authorized by the National Council for Mental Health, the Regional Council for Mental Health, or their designated representatives, in accordance with the provisions of this law.

3. Anyone who refuses to provide information required by the National Council for Mental Health, the Regional Council for Mental Health, or their inspectors in the performance of their duties, or who knowingly provides false information.

4. Anyone who falsely and maliciously reports to a competent authority that a person is suffering from a mental illness as defined by this law.

The Mental Health Care Law establishes regulations to protect the rights of mental health patients, ensure their safety, and prevent them from being exposed to danger.

The law also specifies penalties for those who violate these regulations.
