UN official: Egypt possesses remarkable biodiversity reflecting uniqueness of its natural resources

CAIRO - 30 March 2026: Chitose Noguchi, the UNDP Resident Representative in Egypt, affirmed that Egypt possesses remarkable biodiversity that reflects the richness of its ecosystems and the uniqueness of its natural resources.

 

She emphasized that this diversity is a fundamental pillar for achieving sustainable development and addressing environmental challenges.

 

Biodiversity: A pillar of sustainable development

 

In a statement to the Middle East News Agency (MENA), Noguchi said that Egypt’s recently launched National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for 2024–2030 represents a crucial step toward protecting natural resources and promoting sustainable development, given the increasing global challenges that threaten biodiversity and lead to its degradation.

 

She explained that ecosystems play a pivotal role in confronting climate change and mitigating the effects of natural disasters.

 

She also noted that the updated strategy includes 21 national objectives and provides a clear framework for protecting ecosystems, restoring degraded lands, and promoting the sustainable management of natural resources.

 

Noguchi added that the program supports the implementation of this strategy through innovative initiatives, including the Biodiversity Finance Initiative, which aims to mobilize financial resources from the public and private sectors. This is in addition to supporting programs such as the Red Sea Initiative and the World Coral Reef Fund, thus contributing to the provision of sustainable environmental financing.

 

She expressed her pride in collaborating with the Egyptian government to implement this strategy and provide nature-based solutions, emphasizing her aspiration to strengthen joint efforts to protect Egypt's natural heritage and ensure its sustainability for future generations.

 

Noguchi stressed that commitment to implementing environmental policies and updating strategies is the cornerstone of biodiversity conservation in light of increasing global challenges, affirming that Egypt’s significant capabilities qualify it to achieve tangible progress in this field.
