CAIRO – 29 March 2026: During its plenary session on Sunday, chaired by Speaker Hisham Badawi, the House of Representatives approved an amendment to Article 55 of a government-proposed draft law revising certain provisions of Law No. 7 of 2010, which regulates nuclear and radioactive activities.
The amended article stipulates a ban on the import, customs clearance, export, or transport of any radioactive materials, radioactive sources, or radioactive components without prior approval from the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority and in accordance with its established conditions and standards.
Under the law, the X-ray machines used in the medical field are exempt from this provision.
In its report, the parliamentary committee stated that the amendments aim to strengthen the legislative framework governing nuclear and radioactive activities and enhance the efficiency of the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority, enabling it to carry out its oversight role more effectively by addressing gaps identified through practical experience.
The committee added that the amendments include a more precise definition of radioactive facilities, as well as updates to the fee structure for licenses, permits, and approvals, in line with economic changes, while remaining consistent with constitutional provisions.
