CAIRO – 29 March 2026: Three major governorates- Cairo, Giza, and Qalyubia- suspended classes on Sunday due to a wave of unstable weather affecting the country.
As some students had already arrived at school before the suspension decisions were announced, Minister of Education and Technical Education Mohamed Abdel Latif instructed all schools in the three governorates to continue supervising students whose parents were unable to pick them up, and to ensure that no exams were administered.
Minister Abdel Latif also emphasized that students must remain inside school premises until they are safely collected by their parents.
Since the early hours of this morning, the country has been experiencing unstable weather conditions, ranging from intermittent rainfall of varying intensity in some areas to strong winds stirring up sand and dust in others. These rapid fluctuations are typical of spring, which officially began on Friday, March 20.
As the day progressed, the Meteorological Authority reported a relative improvement in weather conditions across northern Egypt, extending to Greater Cairo. However, the possibility of rain remains in parts of the Gulf of Suez, Sinai, and northern Upper Egypt.
In its latest update, the authority indicated the presence of cloud cover over parts of central and southern Upper Egypt, blocking sunlight.
The Meteorological Authority also issued a warning that, starting Tuesday evening, March 31, there is a chance of rain of varying intensities across northern Egypt, accompanied by strong winds ranging from 40 to 50 km/h. These winds are expected to stir up sand and dust, leading to reduced horizontal visibility in some areas.
The authority added that from Monday, March 30, 2026, to Friday, April 3, 2026, cold weather will prevail in the early morning, becoming warm to hot during the day in most areas, before turning cold again at night.
