CAIRO – 24 March 2026: Egypt has suspended schools nationwide and in-person university classes on Wednesday and Thursday as severe weather conditions are forecast across the country.

The move comes while the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) has warned of “highly unstable weather” on Wednesday. Moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms, and hail are expected across much of the country, including Cairo.

Some regions are also forecast to experience strong winds carrying dust and sand, reducing visibility. The EMA advised residents to avoid standing under trees, billboards, or dilapidated buildings.

The Ministry of Education announced that students, teachers, and staff at all schools will be granted a holiday over the two days.

The decision aims to ensure equal opportunities for all students and protect them from potential risks posed by the anticipated weather, the ministry said.

Separately, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Abdel-Aziz Konsowa directed universities and institutes to suspend in-person classes on the same days, with teaching to continue online.

The higher education directive excludes medical teams, campus security personnel, occupational health and safety staff, and others whose duties require physical presence, with university administrations authorized to determine necessary attendance.
