CAIRO - 24 March 2026: In an unprecedented engineering feat, the General Authority for Roads and Bridges has completed the construction of the "Khor May Bridge," one of the largest engineering projects on Line 1 of the high-speed electric train network.
Khor May bridge is a landmark achievement in Egypt's high-speed rail network (HSR), specifically the first line connecting Ain Sokhna, El Alamein, and Matrouh.
- Connecting the Mountains to the High-Speed Rail Route
The Khor May Bridge serves as a vital artery connecting the two mountainous sides across a major stream in the 15th of May area. It was designed as an essential part of the high-speed electric train route, overcoming rugged natural obstacles using the latest international construction systems.
- Record-Breaking Heights for the Highest Bridge in Egypt
The General Authority for Roads and Bridges revealed the astonishing technical details of this colossal project:
Height: The bridge is the highest of its kind in Egypt, with two of its axes reaching a height of 90 meters each, and the remaining axes having gradual heights, all carved into the slopes of the two mountains.
Dimensions: The bridge consists of nine spans, with a total concrete length of 550 meters and a width of up to 14 meters.
Engineering: The superstructure was constructed using a "movable carriage" system, standing 8 meters above the 90-meter-high crest and spanning 340 meters.
Metal Components: The bridge comprises three steel spans, each 60 meters long, with a total weight of 2,250 tons. These spans were constructed using the advanced Deck Pushing system.
Project Significance in the Smart Transportation Network: The Khor Mayo Bridge stands as a testament to the Egyptian engineers’ ability to overcome challenging mountainous terrain and ensure the uninterrupted passage of the high-speed train without deviations or obstacles.
This contributes to achieving record travel times and the highest levels of safety for users of the green public transportation network.
