CAIRO – 21 March 2026: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Colombian President Gustavo Petro discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries and well as efforts to de-escalation tensions in the Middle East, the Egyptian Presidency said in a statement.
Growing Relations
El-Sisi expressed appreciation for the steady development of ties between Egypt and Colombia, particularly following Petro’s visit to Cairo in October 2025, and stressed the importance of continuing to expand cooperation across various fields.
Petro, for his part, affirmed Colombia’s interest in deepening relations with Egypt and advancing them to broader horizons as the two leaders discussed opportunities for cooperation in cultural and educational exchange, tourism and civil aviation, as well as energy, trade and investment.
Middle East De-escalation
The call also addressed regional developments, with the Colombian president listening to El-Sisi’s assessment of ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
El-Sisi outlined Egypt’s efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East and spare the region a state of comprehensive chaos.
He reiterated Egypt’s full support for the security and stability of Arab states and its rejection of any violations of their sovereignty and security or threats to their resources.
Petro praised Egypt’s role in working to reduce tensions and expressed hope for a swift restoration of stability in the region.
Gaza Ceasefire
The two leaders also discussed developments in the Gaza Strip.
He highlighted Egypt’s efforts to sustain the ceasefire, facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid without restrictions, and advance early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza.
West Bank, Palestinian Cause
They further reviewed the situation in the West Bank, with El-Sisi commending Colombia’s supportive stance toward the Palestinian cause.
El-Sisi stressing the need to create conditions for the resumption of negotiations aimed at achieving a just and comprehensive settlement to the Palestinian cause, including the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
They highlighted the establishment of a Palestinian state as the only way to achieve permanent peace across the Middle East.
