TEHRAN – 18 March 2026: Israeli forces struck the South Pars gas field near Bushehr, semi-official news agency Tasnim reported, the first time Israel has targeted Iranian natural gas facilities since the start of the Iran war on February 28.
The South Pars/North Dome field shared between Iran and Qatar is widely recognized as the world’s largest natural gas field in terms of total reserves.
Two senior Israeli officials tod Axios that the operation was coordinated with and approved by the US administration.
President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social shortly after the strike: “Remember, for all of those absolute ‘fools’ out there, Iran is considered, by everyone, to be the NUMBER ONE STATE SPONSOR OF TERROR. We are rapidly putting them out of business!”
Qatar expressed opposition to the strike.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Majid Al-Ansari called the attack “dangerous and irresponsible” amid the ongoing military escalation in the region.
He warned that targeting energy infrastructure threatens global energy security, the environment, and the safety of regional populations.
