CAIRO - 18 MARCH 2026: The war around Iran is entering another volatile stretch, with fresh reports of targeted killings at the top of Iran’s security structure, new Iranian missile strikes in response and a mounting spillover across the Gulf and Lebanon.

Israel’s decapitation strikes:

In the latest major development, Israel has been reported to have killed two senior Iranian figures, namely Ali Larijani and Basij commander Gholamreza Soleimani, in strikes presented as part of a strategy to disrupt Iran’s leadership and command structures.

The Wall Street Journal described the assassinations as a significant escalation in Israel’s targeting campaign.

The Associated Press also reported that Iran’s retaliation followed the killing of Larijani and Soleimani.

Iran’s retaliation, missiles toward Israel and the Gulf:

Following those strikes, Iran launched new waves of missiles and drones toward Israel and multiple Gulf countries, according to AP, as regional air defenses were activated in several states.

AP also reported that the UAE briefly closed its airspace after intercepting Iranian missile and drone attacks, underscoring how quickly civil aviation and infrastructure become part of the risk picture when escalation spikes.

Lebanon front: Israel expands operations against Hezbollah:

On the Lebanon track, Reuters reported Israel saying its troops launched limited operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, while also stating displaced Lebanese would not return to the south until Israeli border communities are secure.

Human cost and regional anxiety:

AP said the expanding conflict has brought rising casualties across Iran, Lebanon and Israel, while attacks and counter-attacks have increasingly hit not only military targets but also infrastructure and residential areas in the wider region.
