Egypt's FM Badr Abdelatty, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas talk ways to de-escalate military tensions in region

CAIRO - 14 March 2026: A telephone call took place on Friday between Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad Dr. Badr Abdelatty, and High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.

The call addressed ways to develop Egyptian-European strategic relations and de-escalate military tensions in the region.

Minister Abdelatty discussed with the European official the comprehensive strategic partnership between Egypt and the European Union and ways to strengthen and expand it.

He commended the progress witnessed in relations between the two sides across all levels, particularly since the first Egyptian-European Summit last October.

In this context, he emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to enhance economic, investment, and trade cooperation with the European Union in various sectors. He also stressed the importance of expediting the disbursement of the second tranche of the comprehensive support package provided to Egypt to support the Egyptian budget in addressing the severe repercussions of the current military escalation on the economic situation in the region and the world, resulting from rising energy and food prices, increased shipping and maritime insurance costs, and the negative impact of these factors on the Egyptian economy.

The call addressed regional developments in light of the dangerous military escalation in the region and the widening scope of the conflict, which has spread to several countries. The Foreign Minister and the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy agreed on the urgent need for joint action to end the war as quickly as possible.

They stressed the necessity of concerted regional and international efforts to develop specific ideas and a practical plan to end the war swiftly, thus preventing further escalation. In this context, they emphasized the critical importance of continued coordination between Egypt and the European Union to de-escalate tensions and advance the diplomatic and political solutions.

Both sides condemned the attacks on brotherly Arab states and stressed the importance of halting them and ending the ongoing war in the region.

They also agreed on the need to continue coordination and consultation within the framework of the close relations between Egypt and the European Union, and to combine efforts to reduce tensions in the region and work towards a swift end to the war.

They affirmed that the diplomatic track is the only way to prevent the region from sliding into further instability and to preserve regional and international peace and security.
