CAIRO - 13 MARCH 2026: Egypt's President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has issued a decree reshaping Egypt’s National Council for Human Rights (NCHR) for a new four-year term, appointing Ambassador Ahmed Ehab Abdel Ahad Mohamed Gamal El-Din as chair and Mohamed Anwar Ahmed Esmat El-Sadat as vice chair.

The decree, published in the Official Gazette, names 25 members drawn from public life, academia, legal circles and civil society organisations. The presidency framed the move as part of the council’s legal mandate to follow human rights conditions, receive complaints, spread awareness of rights and freedoms, and work with national and international partners in the human rights field.

The council is expected to begin work under its new formation in line with its constitutional and legal responsibilities, with the stated aim of supporting national efforts to strengthen human rights protections and reinforce values of justice, equality and the rule of law.
