CAIRO – 12 March 2026: The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) announced in a statement on Thursday the closure of its embassy in Tehran due to "the war in the Middle East and increasing security risks.”

The statement added that the safety of embassy staff could no longer be guaranteed due to the attacks by the US and Israel against Iran and Iran's attacks on various countries in the Middle East.

“The ambassador and five Swiss staff members left Iran by land today and are now safely outside the country. They will return to Tehran as soon as the situation allows. As part of its good offices, Switzerland will continue to maintain an open line of communication between the United States and Iran, in consultation with the two countries.” FDFA stated.

Both the US and Iran were informed of the temporary closure of the embassy and the departure of the Swiss staff.

The statement noted that Switzerland will continue to be available to channel communications that the parties consider useful. The protecting power mandate, under which Switzerland represents US interests in Iran, can be exercised independently of geographical location. On behalf of the US authorities, the FDFA informs US nationals in Iran about risks and measures taken via its Foreign Interests Section website.
