CAIRO - 9 March, 2026: Iran’s Assembly of Experts has appointed Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader. According to a Tasnim News Agency report, the assembly selected him by an overwhelming majority, marking him as the third leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The transition follows the death of Ali Khamenei, whose passing was confirmed in a Sunday statement by the Iranian government. The statement characterized his death as a result of a joint U.S. and Israeli attack on his residence, labeling the event a "heinous crime" and declaring forty days of national mourning with a seven-day public holiday.

Background on the new leader

Born on September 8, 1969, in Mashhad, Mojtaba Khamenei is the second of Ali Khamenei’s six children. Despite his significant influence within his father’s inner circle, he has maintained a low public profile, never holding a formal government position or frequently engaging with media.

His religious education began at the Alavi school in Tehran before he moved to Qom in 1999 to continue studies at the seminary. He underwent advanced training under high-ranking scholars, including his father, for over seventeen years.

Mojtaba was married to Zahra Haddad-Adel, the daughter of the former Parliament speaker, Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel. According to official reports, Zahra was killed alongside the late Supreme Leader during the same attack on their residence.
