CAIRO – 1 March 2026: Iranian state television confirmed the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in “American-Israeli” airstrikes on Iran, stating that authorities would release further details regarding the circumstances of the incident and forthcoming official arrangements.

State television also announced the assassination of Defense Minister Aziz Nasirzadeh.

The announcement followed intensive U.S.–Israeli airstrikes targeting strategic and vital sites in the capital, Tehran, as well as several other Iranian cities.

The Iranian news agency Fars News Agency reported that the assassination occurred inside his official office in Tehran, amid a series of heavy air and military strikes targeting key security facilities across the country. The Iranian government subsequently declared 40 days of national mourning. Also, Government offices will be closed for 7 days following the announcement.

Donald Trump said the killing of Ali Khamenei is a historic opportunity for Iranians to reclaim their country, adding that Khamenei and the other leaders killed were unable to evade advanced U.S. intelligence capabilities.
