CAIRO – 24 February 2026: Al-Azhar Al-Sharif has condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist crime committed by an extremist member of a "Zionist gang," who set fire to a mosque in the village of Tell, south of Nablus.
Al-Azhar affirmed that this assault embodies systematic "Zionist terrorism" targeting people, holy sites, and land. The institution stated that the act constitutes a flagrant violation of all international laws and conventions, showing brazen contempt for the sanctity and inviolability of places of worship.
The statement stressed that the burning of mosques and attacks on the "Houses of God" lay bare the scale of criminality practiced by the occupying power against the Palestinian people and their sanctities.
Al-Azhar maintained that such criminality is no less heinous than the daily massacres perpetrated against unarmed civilians—including women, children, and the elderly—in Gaza, occurring amidst a "shameful international silence" and an unjustifiable failure to halt ongoing violations.
Furthermore, Al-Azhar warned of the grave danger of allowing such terrorism to continue without effective accountability. It called on the international community to shoulder its legal and moral responsibilities by acting in earnest to protect the Palestinian people and their holy sites.
The institution concluded by demanding an end to the crimes of the occupation and calling for the perpetrators to be held to account, thereby upholding human dignity and respecting the sanctity of religious sites.
