CAIRO – 23 February 2026: Egyptian Ministry of Interior launched an investigation into a video circulating on social media showing a tour guide drawing on the wall of 3,000-year-old Pyramid of Unas in Giza to explain something to tourists.
The Saqqara Tourist Police Station received a report from a local antiquities inspector stating that the tour guide had distorted a monument by drawing on the outer casing of the pyramid while guiding a group of tourists, announced the ministy in a statement on Monday.
The report noted that the markings were subsequently removed by the relevant authorities, the statement added.
The accused was apprehended and admitted to committing the act during questioning. Legal proceedings have been initiated, the statement said.
Article 45 of the 1983 Antiquities Law stipulates that anyone who writes on or inscribes an antiquity is subject to imprisonment of no less than one year and a fine of up to 500,000 Egyptian pounds.
