CAIRO – 21 February 2026: An informed source on Saturday denied circulating reports claiming that Egypt and Iran had agreed to exchange ambassadors.

The source told the Middle East News Agency (MENA) that contacts between Egypt and Iran are taking place within the framework of regional efforts aimed at de-escalation in the Middle East.

Tehran’s semi-official news agency Tasnim on Friday cited remarks attributed to Iranian diplomat Mojtaba Ferdosipour, in which he asserted that Egypt and Iran had agreed to exchange ambassadors.

He claimed that both countries’ leaderships are fully committed politically to the move, and that the only outstanding issue is deciding when to make the official announcement.

Egypt and Iran have not maintained full ambassadorial representation in decades, but have engaged in diplomatic consultations in recent years to strengthen bilateral ties and reduce regional tensions.
