CAIRO — 17 February 2026: Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with senior Kenyan officials in Nairobi on Sunday to accelerate trade and coordinate on Nile Basin water management.

During the visit, Abdelatty delivered a written message from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to President William Ruto, conveying Sisi’s deep appreciation for Ruto’s balanced leadership and his role in fostering stability across the Horn of Africa.

In a Sunday statement, the Foreign Ministry noted that the talks—which included Kenya’s Prime Minister and ministers of trade and water—build upon the "Cairo Declaration" signed in January 2025. Abdelatty emphasized Egypt's commitment to a strategic partnership, offering to share Egyptian expertise in pharmaceuticals, construction, and renewable energy.

Central to the economic agenda is a proposal for Egyptian-led industrial and logistical zones at the ports of Lamu and Mombasa. To facilitate this, Cairo is deploying the Egyptian Agency for Export and Investment Guarantee to mitigate risks for Egyptian firms expanding into East Africa.

The discussions also addressed the critical issue of water security. Both nations affirmed the need for "inclusive cooperation" and a return to consensus-based decision-making within the Nile Basin. Abdelatty stressed Egypt’s rejection of unilateral actions in the Eastern Nile, advocating for development projects that align with international law and protect the interests of all riparian states.

President Ruto, in turn, requested that his greetings be conveyed to President Sisi, praising the Egyptian leader’s constructive role in regional security. Ruto reaffirmed Kenya’s desire to deepen the historic partnership, citing the upcoming eighth session of the Joint Commission in Cairo as a pivotal moment for the two nations' shared prosperity.
