CAIRO – 3 February 2026: The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a statement on Tuesday expressing its support for medical evacuations in Gaza following the reopening of the Rafah crossing.

The reopening enabled numerous patients and their companions to travel directly into Egypt, while other groups were processed via the Kerem Shalom crossing. The WHO noted that this marks a significant development, as the last medical evacuation through Rafah occurred in May 2024.

According to the UN Information Centre, the WHO reported last week that it had facilitated the medical evacuation of 24 children from Gaza to Jordan, accompanied by 36 companions.

On January 26, approximately 50 patients who had been receiving medical treatment in Egypt returned to the Palestinian side as part of arrangements stipulated in the ceasefire agreement.

The WHO indicated that other buses departed for the Rafah crossing to enter Egypt, carrying patients and the hope that the injured would return fully recovered. The organization oversaw the entire transfer process to the crossing.
