CAIRO - 2 February 2026: The Rafah Border Crossing officially reopened in both directions Monday after intensive Egyptian mediation, drawing high-praise from Palestinian leadership and the international community.
The step marks a pivotal step in counteracting the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip.
Shafiq al-Talluli, a prominent member of the Palestinian National Council, lauded Egypt’s "unwavering will" during an interview with Nile News. He emphasized that the reopening is more than just a logistical success; it is a strategic blow against attempts to displace the Palestinian people.
“This achievement represents a decisive step in strengthening the urgent humanitarian relief path for the people of Gaza," al-Talluli stated. "It stands firm against liquidation projects aimed at uprooting Palestinians from their land."
Al-Talluli extended his gratitude to the Egyptian political leadership for insisting the crossing remain a two-way street—ensuring that those seeking medical treatment can return home safely, thereby preserving the demographic integrity of the Strip.
The international community echoed this sentiment, with the United Kingdom issuing a formal statement welcoming the reopening. The British Embassy in Cairo highlighted its role in allowing critically ill Palestinians to access life-saving care in Egyptian hospitals.
While praising Egypt’s pivotal role as a cornerstone of the regional crisis response, the UK also used the moment to call on Israel to remove all impediments to the arrival of all kinds of medical aid into Gaza.
