CAIRO - 2 January 2026: Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Dr. Hani Sweilem, held a meeting Monday to follow up on the progress of ongoing coastal protection projects in Egypt, aimed at mitigating the negative impacts of climate change.

During the meeting, Sweilem reviewed the implementation status of several coastal protection projects currently underway. These include: the Alexandria Coastal Protection Project (Phase 1), spanning 2 kilometers from Bir Masoud to Al-Mahrousa; the Alexandria Coastal Protection Project (Phase 2), covering 600 meters and protecting the Corniche wall and road in the Loran area, as well as restoring the sandy beach in that area; the construction of breakwaters in front of the naval base in Ras El Bar, Damietta, to protect the reclaimed land; the second phase of the Al-Abyad Beach Protection Project in Marsa Matrouh; the protection of low-lying coastal areas west of Edko Port in Beheira Governorate; and the protection of the low-lying coastal area in Matoubes, Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate.

Preparations are underway for two coastal protection projects: the "Protection of the Coastal Area East of Al-Banayeen and Al-Marazqa Villages in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate" and the "Protection of the Area East of Ezbet El-Borg (Phase Two) in the Tawwal Abu El-Rous area of Damietta Governorate."

Preparation is also being made to finalize studies related to coastal management along the 1,200-kilometer North Coast, as well as integrated coastal zone management.

This is in light of the necessity to treat the entire coastal area as a single, interconnected system, rather than a collection of separate projects, while enhancing coordination among various entities to ensure the sustainability of every implemented measure.

Sweilem stated that the Ministry is implementing numerous protection projects, ranging from traditional methods to environmentally friendly natural technologies, which enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of protection structures and serve as a model for future projects.

The Ministry is also keen to support development and facilitate procedures for investors, individuals and the private sector regarding business licenses implemented in the coastal area, and to create an environment that achieves transparency and speed of completion in all dealings between all concerned parties, through holding regular meetings of the Supreme Committee for Beach Licensing to expedite decisions regarding applications submitted by investors and citizens, with the Ministry establishing a digital application for beach licenses as part of the effort to enhance governance related to all procedures for submitting license applications.
