CAIRO – 31 January 2026: During a phone call on Saturday with Angolan Foreign Minister Tete António, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration, and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs, Dr. Badr Abdel-Aty, expressed Egypt’s deep appreciation for Angola’s leading role during its current presidency of the African Union.
Minister Abdel-Aty commended Angola’s efforts to strengthen joint African action, citing the intensive diplomatic engagement and high-level meetings organized under its AU presidency.
He stressed the importance of close coordination ahead of the African Union Summit of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for mid-February, to ensure its success and achieve tangible outcomes that advance Africa’s priorities in peace, security, and development—particularly in light of Egypt’s chairmanship of the African Union Peace and Security Council in February 2026.
The two ministers discussed ways to further support and strengthen bilateral relations and to coordinate positions on issues of mutual interest. Abdel-Aty praised the growing momentum in Egyptian-Angolan ties and the shared commitment to deepening political understanding and consultation, with a view to expanding cooperation.
He highlighted the importance of building on the outcomes of the Egyptian-Angolan Joint Committee meeting held in Angola last December, noting that it would help advance cooperation in political, economic, and investment fields.
The foreign minister also reaffirmed Egypt’s interest in expanding collaboration in regional connectivity and transport, infrastructure development, renewable energy, and the pharmaceutical sector.
Abdel-Aty noted the strong interest of Egyptian companies in investing in projects within the Lobito Development Corridor, emphasizing that such projects would serve the mutual interests and aspirations of both countries. He also expressed hope that the next session of the Egyptian-Angolan Business Forum would be convened at the earliest opportunity.
On regional and continental issues, the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued close coordination on African developments, efforts to promote peace and stability, and support for sustainable development. They also exchanged views on a number of regional challenges, stressing the importance of unifying African positions and promoting African-led solutions.
The call concluded with both sides underscoring the deep fraternal ties between Egypt and Angola and their shared determination to further develop bilateral cooperation across various fields, while enhancing coordination on African and international issues of common interest in line with the aspirations of both peoples.
