Egypt’s Interior Minister Mahmoud Tawfiq meets Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi during talks in Rome - Egypt Today
CAIRO - 30 JANUARY 2026: Egypt’s Interior Minister Mahmoud Tawfiq has held talks in Rome with Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi as part of a visit aimed at strengthening security cooperation and coordination on issues of shared concern.
According to Egyptian media reports, the two ministers led an expanded meeting at Italy’s Interior Ministry, reviewing existing areas of cooperation between the two interior ministries and ways to deepen joint work, alongside the latest developments in security files of mutual interest.
Piantedosi praised Egypt’s regional and international role, and commended what he described as successive successes by Egyptian security bodies in counterterrorism and in tackling organized crime, particularly efforts linked to combating illegal migration. He also said Italy is interested in widening cooperation mechanisms and raising the level of bilateral coordination to address evolving security challenges.
Tawfiq, for his part, stressed the depth of ties between the two countries and called for enhanced cooperation and expertise-sharing in areas of common interest, as well as joint efforts to curb the negative spillovers of organized crime amid broader regional and international pressures.
The visit also included tours of several Italian police sites, with Tawfiq praising their readiness and underscoring continued coordination and consultation to confront security threats that endanger international peace and stability.
