CAIRO -30 January 2026: The Ministry of Health and Population announced that more than 20.6 million citizens have been screened nationwide as part of a presidential initiative to treat chronic diseases and detect kidney disease early.

Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the ministry’s spokesperson, said the initiative operates through 3,601 primary healthcare units. The program targets citizens over age 40, as well as those 18 and older with a history of chronic illness, providing free, high-quality healthcare.

Screenings include blood pressure, blood sugar and lipid levels, kidney function, and body mass index. Participants also receive awareness sessions on risk factors and follow-up programs based on their results.

Abdel Ghaffar confirmed that patients diagnosed with hypertension or diabetes receive free monthly medications from their local health units. Cases requiring specialized care are referred to hospitals for treatment at no cost to the patient, an effort the ministry says significantly reduces the risk of chronic kidney failure.

The initiative follows international guidelines developed by the ministry and the World Health Organization. Medical staff receive ongoing training on detection devices, and confirmed cases are treated at the state's expense.

Abdel Ghaffar urged those with a family history of diabetes or hypertension to visit a health unit, emphasizing that early detection is critical for avoiding serious complications.
